KENYA : AMINA MOHAMED LEADS THE PACK FOR THE DG-WTO POST
Her political, diplomatic and trade credentials which are unmatched, are necessary for an incoming Director-General.
The Kenyan candidate for post of the Director-General of the WTO is the one to beat. Members that we spoke to recall her performance on the 16th of July, at the General Council and subsequent interactions during the campaign period. They are convinced that her vision for the reform of the Organization is articulate and well thought and if implemented, will address the needs of Members.
Many say that her political, diplomatic and trade credentials which are unmatched, are necessary for an incoming Director-General.
"With the Multilateral Trading System in crisis, the WTO requires a leader with indepth knowledge of the WTO system" said one of the Ambassadors.
The majority that we spoke to confirmed their overwhelming support for her as a candidate who can work with Members to revitalise the Organization. Her track record indicates that she has delivered successful outcomes as Minister responsible international trade. Other candidates are from Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, Nigeria and Korea.
The second round of the consultations is ongoing and will end on 6th October and she remains the candidate to watch for the final round which should end by early November.
