ISAIAS AFWERKI FACES ATTACKS AS THE EU ATTEMPT TO DRIVE A WEDGE BETWEEN ERITREA AND ETHIOPIA.

Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki since signing a peace deal with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in July 2018 rekindled hopes for sustainable peace in the region. In recent months, Afwerki has become a key player in the Tigrayan conflict and other diplomatic and military issues in the region.

Since the attack by TPLF against the Ethiopian armed forces, several misleading information and propaganda have been propagated by western media outlets. Most of the reports have accused Ethiopia and Eritrean forces of crimes and rights violations.

On March 22, 2021, the European Union sanctioned Eritrea’s National Security Agency with an asset freeze and travel ban. Experts explained that the sanctions against Eritrea were linked to the EU’s support for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – the governing party of Ethiopia’s Tigray region which is currently engaged in a bloody conflict with the Ethiopian government.

The EU has been doggedly working to save and bring back to power the defunct TPLF clique, and to undermine the region’s own efforts to address challenges and advance comprehensive and durable cooperation.

The EU has particularly targeted Eritrea in a futile attempt to drive a wedge between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

In recent reports, the leadership of the Eritrean president has also come under the spotlight. Afwerki is being accused of grooming his son to succeed him. However, the constitution of Eritrea permits anyone to hold a leadership position. Observers have described such reports and aimed to create chaos.

Despite the negative reports, Isaias Afwerki is still among the most accomplished leaders in the world today. Even with the ongoing demonization campaign against him, Isaias still enjoys popular support among his people.
